Dr. Barbara Atlee graduated from the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1982. After 3 years of general small animal practice in California, she returned to UC Davis in 1985 for a residency in Veterinary Dermatology. In 1987, she joined the Veterinary Dermatology Service, a referral practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. She also returned to graduate school at UC Davis and obtained a Masters Degree in Comparative Pathology, specializing in dermatopathology.
After spending 18 months in Paris, France, Dr. Atlee returned to the US in 1991, obtained her board certification as a specialist from the American College of Veterinary Dermatology, and started the Animal Dermatology & Allergy Center in Northern California. During 1994, she also served as a part-time clinical instructor in Dermatology at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.
In late 1994, when her husband (Dr. Thierry Olivry) joined the faculty at the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine, the couple moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. Dr. Atlee started the Animal Dermatology & Allergy Clinic in the Triangle Area. She also worked intermittently as a part-time clinical instructor at the NCSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital until 1997. The Animal Dermatology & Allergy Clinic has gradually expanded, and Dr. Atlee currently sees referrals at three veterinary specialty hospitals in Cary, Durham and Wilmington, North Carolina.
